How to Add Animated Step Titles in CapCut

Show one short, numbered action title as that task begins, then clear it before it hides the detail viewers need to copy. Use native text or layer an animated step card over your own footage, keeping subtitles in a separate area. A rendered card keeps its configured number and words: you must place the right label at each transition, and custom Modisign labels require Pro for download.
What does the Productivity tip card label?
An overlay is an extra visual layer above your recording. A step title identifies the current action, such as “1 — Prepare the files.”

Illustration of the free Productivity tip preset over sample footage. The illustrative creator footage is not included in the download; this is not a receiving-editor or platform test.
Only the overlay file was exported; we did not test CapCut import, keying, custom-label exports or platform playback. App instructions below follow the official pages listed below.
Have your footage, an ordered action list, subtitles if needed, and an editor ready.
How do you label each action?
Write the actions before styling them. According to CapCut’s tutorial-signposting guide, progress should follow meaningful learner tasks, rather than runtime or every edit point; optional methods and troubleshooting should be identified separately. CapCut tutorial progress guidance.
My wording suggestion is verb plus object: “Prepare the files,” “Choose the format,” “Check the result.” These are proposed labels, not a tested custom sequence. Keep the same grammatical pattern so each card reads as an instruction. Replace “Next thing” with the actual action; put detailed settings in the demonstration or explanation.
Count only the required actions. If your tutorial has three, label them 1, 2 and 3, with the same optional total throughout. For the opening promise before those actions, see how to write an opening hook title.
How do you add and align the step titles?
Find each task’s actual start. Review the footage and note when the viewer begins a new action. My suggestion is to anchor the label there, rather than at an arbitrary camera cut. Expect the title to describe what is happening underneath it.
Choose native text or ready-made motion. According to CapCut, Text → Add text adds your own words on mobile or desktop. Native text is a valid choice for an entire custom sequence without separate rendered assets. CapCut text instructions.
For ready-made animation, browse numbered step-title overlays, choose a Free badge, or open the exact tested free Productivity tip configuration. Free elements download as they are as green-screen H.264 MP4, without sign-up or watermark; Background and Format remain selectable. Leave Green screen selected here. This preset is useful for a workflow check or a matching productivity point; changing its number, title or total requires Pro for download.
Layer and key the downloaded graphic. Follow the documentation-based CapCut overlay import and green-removal workflow. Chroma key removes the sampled green background from the animation layer above your footage. Keep the two clips overlapping for the whole animation; skip this asset step if you chose native text. These receiving-editor steps were not tested here.
Align the readable title with its action. CapCut documents adjusting overlay position, size and duration. Overlay adjustment guidance. My suggestion is to review both the entrance and the moment the words settle. The tested card lasts three seconds including motion; reserve that interval before important detail needs the same space. If the action offers no room, use a simpler native title instead of cutting the animation mid-entrance.
Keep subtitles and step labels separate. Use the title to summarize the task, while subtitles carry the speech. Give each a clear area and check the longest subtitle line. For a native Shorts alternative, according to YouTube, Text adds words and Timeline lets you drag their start and stop points. Those controls time native text, not words already rendered into an imported video. YouTube text-timing instructions.
Save and review the complete sequence. According to CapCut, Export saves the edited result. CapCut export instructions. Watch it at phone size without pausing. Confirm numbering, subtitle clearance and each title’s clean exit; inspect the intended destination preview separately before posting.
What should you fix if a title is unclear or mistimed?
These are suggested checks, not receiving-editor compatibility results.
| Problem | Check | Suggested fix |
|---|---|---|
| Label names the previous action | Footage when the words settle | Move the title to the correct task transition. |
| Number or total changes unexpectedly | Entire sequence in order | Correct the action list, then update every affected label. |
| Title covers a menu, hand or tool | Full animation and next shot | Choose open space or clear the title earlier. |
| Subtitles collide with the badge | Longest spoken line | Separate their areas or stagger the title’s appearance. |
| Green edges remain | Badge and letters during motion | Re-sample green and balance the keying controls. |
The edge adjustment follows CapCut’s troubleshooting guidance. For lettering, W3C’s WCAG reference specifies 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large text. Evaluate words against their backing or footage, not the green plate you plan to remove. W3C contrast guidance.
Where should the cards appear, and how do you keep them consistent?
Treat these as design suggestions:
- Cooking: introduce “Salt the water” as that action begins, away from the pot and hands; clear it before a close-up needs the space.
- Screen recording: introduce “Choose the format” before opening the relevant menu, then leave the menu unobstructed.
- Hands-on repair: label “Check the result” over the wider setup shot, then clear the label for the inspection detail.
Use the guide to text clear of platform controls for destination checks. No universal margin or reading duration is established here.
Keep one number treatment, accent, text case and placement rule across the sequence. Check each shot anyway. A repeated style is useful only while the action and words remain visible.
For custom labels, Modisign Pro is $9/month plus applicable tax and unlocks text, look, colors and the available size/position controls for every overlay. Step-title has Number, Point title, optional Out of, Layout, Size, Vertical and Horizontal controls. Anyone can preview custom configurations; downloading them requires sign-in and Pro. The custom examples here were not rendered in this test.
The optional total is a rendered label, not a live progress tracker. Modisign does not detect actions or advance the number; your editing sequence supplies those changes. Desktop also offers transparent VP9 WebM with alpha, the information storing transparency, including for unchanged free presets. Receiving-editor alpha support was not tested here; verify import and the saved composite in your exact version before choosing it.
When should you add a save reminder?
My suggestion is to wait until the final result is visible and all required steps are complete. A recipe, settings checklist or repeatable routine can justify “Save this for later”; an unfinished instruction needs its missing detail first.
Use one closing request, after the final step card clears. Browse save-reminder overlays if a bookmark animation fits. The bookmark and cursor are rendered graphics: they do not save the post or trigger a platform action.
To check the simple download route first, try an unchanged free overlay; the landing selection does not contain every family. Modisign supplies the animation, while your editor combines it with your own footage.
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn the free step 4 card into step 1?
The free Productivity tip preset downloads as it is, including number 4, its title and total 5. Background and Format remain selectable without sign-up or watermark. Use native editor text for your own sequence, or customize the Modisign animation with Pro; customized downloads require sign-in and Pro.
Should every camera cut get a new step number?
No. Number the actions the viewer needs to perform. Two shots showing the same action can keep the same number. Treat an optional variation or troubleshooting detour as supporting material rather than silently changing the required step count.
Do step titles replace subtitles?
No. A step title summarizes the current action; subtitles carry the spoken explanation. Keep their timing and placement separate so both remain readable. Correct the subtitles against the actual speech instead of treating a short label as a transcript.
Is the step card a live progress tracker or clickable control?
No. The number, words and optional total are rendered graphics. Each file keeps its configured label; it does not detect completed actions, advance itself through your tutorial or create navigation. Place the appropriate title at each task transition in your editor.
Can I use a transparent title instead of removing green?
Modisign offers transparent VP9 WebM with alpha, the information storing transparency, on desktop, including for unchanged free presets. This run did not test receiving-editor import or alpha preservation. Verify both in your exact editor version before relying on it; the demonstrated export is green-screen H.264 MP4.

Tested in Modisign modisign.app, October 2026 on Desktop browser: On October 9, 2026, exported the unchanged free Productivity tip preset with default Green screen: 1080×1920 H.264 MP4, 30 fps, 90 frames, 3 s. We checked the file; an extracted frame at 1.6 seconds showed a yellow number 4 badge, Do the hardest task first and 4/5 against green. No receiving-editor import, keying, custom-label export, transparent WebM or platform test was performed.
Tested in Modisign Local Modisign site, October 2026 on Desktop Chrome on macOS: October 14: Checked the Productivity tip illustration and corrected its free link to include Custom positioning and 55% Size. Reviewed the step-card placement and layout labels. Look changes palette colors; Layout changes structure and palette changes preserve wording and placement. Missing catalog images prevented the editor from loading, so no new export or receiving-editor test was completed. Earlier export measurements retain their original dates.
