How to Add a Green-Screen Overlay in CapCut

According to CapCut’s guides, put the animated clip on a layer above your own footage, select that clip, and use Chroma Key to remove its green background. On mobile, add it through Overlay; on desktop, use a higher video track. A free Modisign overlay supplies the animation, but you still need to check its edges and export the combined video in CapCut. CapCut’s overlay guide, desktop keying guide.
What do you need to key the red subscribe overlay?
An overlay is an extra visual layer over your video. Chroma key removes a selected background color from that layer so the footage underneath becomes visible, according to CapCut’s green-screen guide.

Illustration of the free Subscribe button, red preset over sample footage. The illustrative creator footage is not included in the download; this is not a receiving-editor or platform test.
Have your own footage, a green-screen animation file and CapCut mobile or desktop ready. The CapCut steps below follow the official documentation listed below. Its pages use different menu labels, so treat the paths as documented directions rather than a verified walkthrough of your installed version.
How do you add and key the animation?
The expected result is your footage with the animation over it and no visible green rectangle.
Decide whether you need an animation file. For a plain written reminder, CapCut documents Text → Add text; you can write directly in the editor. Use a rendered element when you want the ready-made button animation instead. Native text instructions.
Download an unchanged free overlay. Browse subscribe-button overlays and choose the Free badge, or open the tested free red subscribe preset. Leave its wording, look, duration and layout unchanged; choose Green screen for Background and the Format that matches your project. Free elements download as they are as green-screen H.264 MP4, without sign-up or watermark. The file contains the graphic, not your footage.
Put the animation above your footage. On mobile, according to CapCut’s overlay guide, start with New project, select your main video and tap Add. Open Overlay → Add overlay, choose the animation and add it. On desktop, CapCut’s keying guide places the main footage on the lowest track and the green-screen clip on the track directly above it. You should now see two layers, with green temporarily covering the footage. Mobile overlay instructions, desktop track order.
Select the animation and remove its green. According to CapCut’s desktop guide, the path is Video → Remove BG → Chroma Key. Its mobile green-screen guide says to select the overlay and swipe the bottom toolbar to Cutout → Chroma key. Another official mobile guide uses Edit → Remove BG, then Chroma Key. Use the path shown in your version and sample the green background with the color picker. Desktop controls, mobile Cutout path, mobile Remove BG path.
CapCut documents Strength and Shadow on desktop, and Intensity and Shadow in its mobile guide. Adjust removal until the green disappears while the graphic stays intact. Chroma key selects a color; Auto removal instead identifies a subject using AI. For this solid-color asset, follow the keying route. Desktop green-screen methods, mobile adjustments.
Position it and inspect the whole animation. CapCut’s overlay guide documents pinching and dragging on mobile, and resizing with corner points on desktop. Keep the graphic away from the face or action. Positioning controls. My suggestion is to watch from the entrance through the exit, checking the white card and moving cursor as carefully as the button.
Export the combined video. According to CapCut’s background-removal guide, desktop Export opens settings for resolution, frame rate, bitrate and codec; confirm Export to save. On mobile, use the upper-right export icon and choose resolution and frame rate. Export instructions. Open the saved file and check the overlay’s entire appearance. As a practical check, make sure you saved the composition with your footage underneath, rather than the standalone green-screen asset.
What should you check if green remains or edges disappear?
CapCut’s desktop troubleshooting guide recommends balancing removal strength, Shadow and the sampled color, rather than using one universal slider value. The checks below adapt that documented advice to a graphic; they are not measured CapCut test results. Green-fringe troubleshooting.
| Problem | Check | Suggested fix |
|---|---|---|
| A green fringe remains | Inspect the sampled color and moving edges | Re-sample a clean green patch; balance Strength and Shadow. |
| Parts of the card disappear | Check whether removal is too strong | Reduce Strength and inspect the full motion again. |
| Green is gone but footage is absent | Inspect the timeline beneath the graphic | Place the footage below the keyed clip and make sure it overlaps in time. |
The layer-order check follows CapCut’s desktop timeline instructions. Before adjusting sliders again, confirm that the selected clip is the animation you intend to key.
Where and when should the overlay appear?
These are design suggestions, not platform placement rules or promises of more subscribers:
- Talking-head clip: try the reminder after you finish a useful point, in open space beside your face. Read the text at phone size before deciding it is large enough.
- Hands-on tutorial: wait until the demonstrated action is complete. Keep the button away from hands, tools and instructional text.
- Closing reminder: leave enough footage behind the graphic for its entrance, readable state and exit. The tested preset lasts six seconds; plan around that length rather than cutting it arbitrarily.
For opening words rather than a subscribe reminder, browse hook-title overlays, or use native text. If you need to customize a Modisign overlay, Pro is $9/month plus applicable tax and unlocks text, look, colors, and the layout controls supported by each family. Anyone can preview custom configurations; their download requires sign-in and Pro.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to film myself against a green screen?
No. The green background belongs to the downloaded animation, while your own footage is the layer underneath it. This workflow removes green from the graphic layer, so your original recording can stay as it is.
Can I change the free subscribe animation’s words or colors?
Free Modisign presets download as they are, without sign-up or watermark; Background and Format remain selectable. Pro is $9/month plus applicable tax and unlocks text, look, colors, and the layout controls supported by each family. You can preview custom configurations before subscribing; downloading them requires sign-in and Pro.
Can I use a transparent WebM instead of removing green?
Modisign offers transparent VP9 WebM with alpha on desktop; alpha is the information that stores transparency. It is not exclusively a Pro output choice for unchanged free presets. CapCut import and alpha preservation were not tested here, so use the green-screen MP4 for these instructions and verify WebM in your exact editor version before relying on it.
Does the animated button subscribe the viewer automatically?
No. The Subscribe button, cursor and Subscribed state are rendered graphics. They are a visual reminder and do not create a clickable control or change a viewer’s subscription.

Tested in Modisign modisign.app, October 2026 on Desktop browser: On October 8, 2026, exported the unchanged free Subscribe button, red preset with Green screen: 1080×1920 H.264 MP4, 30 fps, 180 frames, 6 s; we checked the file and a frame at 1.6 seconds showed the red button, white card, bell and cursor on green. No CapCut import or keying test was performed.
Tested in Modisign Local Modisign site, October 2026 on Desktop Chrome on macOS: October 14: Checked the Subscribe button, red illustration and free configuration. The red button, bell and cursor are shown on a white card over sample footage. Look changes palette colors; Layout changes structure and palette changes preserve wording and placement. Missing catalog images prevented the editor from loading, so no new export or receiving-editor test was completed. Earlier export measurements retain their original dates.
